Sometimes just listening can be as much fun as a person can have fully clothed and not prone. I was in one of my favorite restaurants tonight when a young bearded fellow came in in and sat next to me. Here is the conversation he had with the bartender as best that I can recall:

Bartender: "Can I help you sir?"

Bubba: What kinda soup you got tonight?"

Bartender: Wisconsin beer cheese, chicken noodle, and chili."

Bubba: "Isn't that what you had last night? I don't want the same soup tonight!"

Bartender: I didn't work last night, so I am not sure what soups they served."

Bubba: "Could they make some different soup for me then?"

Bartender: "I'm sorry sir, but those are the soups we have tonight."

Bubba: "Well, this is bullshit! Could I see a menu then?"

The bartender handed him a menu and then went on to take care of some customers who were waiting to be be served. But, Bubba, wasn't done!

Bubba: "Boy, I need to order some food. NOW!"

Bartender: "What can I get you?"

Bubba: "Well if you ain't going to make me any soup, then could I get a plain hamburger"?

Bartender: "A plain hamburger. Would you like anything else with that?"

Bubba: "Hell yeah, I want cheese and pickles and onion and lettuce and tomaters on it too, with fries."

Bartender: "That's called a "loaded cheeseburger" on the menu."

Bubba: "Well, I couldn't see the menu without my readin' glasses on".

It's been a bit since I have been able to update you concerning Captain Crab. We were sailing off the coast of Virginia last week when a terrible hurricane nearly capsized the ship. We ran aground and have just been able to limp back to port this weekend.

Anyway, the Dear Captain Crab has been spotted in the UK in various pubs trying to get the locals to engage in dwile flonking. He wasn't having much luck so he decided to gongoozle for a few weeks before returning home.

Sebastian Bartholomew Jones-Smythe III, former derivatives trader and now a corn farmer, was surprised Saturday morning to find that his lawn had been mowed in the middle of the night. Not only had the grass been cut, but it had a very interesting pattern.

"I never mow the same direction twice, but it never occurred to me to mow the lawn in a continuous circle" said Jones-Smythe. "When I lived in the East, my estate caretaker did some wonderful things but nothing like this" he added.

"I am not upset that someone did this work for me, especially with the hot weather that we are experiencing this weekend. Heat stoke is a distinct possibility for someone like me who has spent most of his life sheltered from the sun and real work. However, I am concerned about the possibility that the fellow who did this might become more brazen in his use of my equipment. What's to prevent him from combining my corn?"

Local authorities suspect that this may be the work of the notorious Captain Crab, who has been missing for the past week. He was last seen with irongrant, a lesser known, but foolish character of sorts.

irongrant is known to have been employed for a time by a lawn care company. The authorities believe that he may have used the threat of hiding Captain Crab's rum to force him into doing this dastardly deed.

The Captain sent me a picture and his plan this evening. It seems as though irongrant has convinced him to start a "Retired Pirates Home". They have secured a building that they believe is suitable. He did not give me any details about location or whether they are purchasing this property or just inhabiting it.

irongrant is still mightily upset about the Philippine fiasco. My understanding of the relationship that these two have is tepid at best. When they are drinking heavily they are as close as brothers. When they sober up the problems start.

My heart tells me this "Retired Pirates Home" is just part of a plan hatched by irongrant to finally get revenge.

Captain Crab and irongrant were last seen walking down an alley in Wadleigh, Iowa. They had been imbibing heavily. A witness to their drinking said he overheard irongrant say something about getting even after the Luzon incident.

How irongrant came to be in Iowa is a mystery to everyone involved. His last known location was either in South Carolina or South Florida. It had south in it anyway.

Their whereabouts is unknown at this time. Below is the last known picture of Captain Crab. No up to date pictures of irongrant are known to exist.

Captain Crab's Strange Friend

I first met irongrant (he doesn't capitalize his name) in 1975 while he was attending summer school on Pigeon Key, Florida. After a night of drinking and dancing with blue haired ladies, I actually started to like him somewhat. He later joined my crew as a deckhand but was such a pitiful sailor that I had to set him adrift in a dinghy off the coast of the Philippine Island of Luzon.

Over the years we have had sporadic contact. He will send me pictures occasionally that I post, but he a has always asked that he not be credited for his sub par photography skills.

He recently sent me pictures for a post last week and asked that I post them as my own. Which I did. Last night he sent me the following video and said that he is ready to be identified. He has decided to continue his life's work of talking to anything he knows will not talk back to him.

I didn't think setting him adrift would affect him so much.

Yesterday while mowing the lawn, I became aware of some Killdeer who seemed quite upset. I was near the edge of the lawn near where we let the brome grass grow. I looked around and saw this little duffer running. A fuzz ball with skinny legs.

Tourists, uh, upset me at times. Obnoxious, rude, etc. It bothers me more than it should I know. But, sometimes it's fun to know that I am still ahead of them.

There were several of us waiting to check into the hotel this evening. As I stood in line some were upset that it was taking so long. When checking in there are several things that need to be done; name, address, phone #, credit card, etc. Sometimes the computer cannot take all the information in a second.

The couple in front of me had no reservation, so they ended up paying the full amount, $109.00. The people behind me were amazed when it took me about 22 seconds to check in and my rate is $71.00. It's good to be a frequent guest.

Oh, and I am in a suite with a kitchenette.

The Missouri River is flooding. Floods happen. There are some things that cannot be controlled. Part of the reason is man's desire to change nature.

Prior to channelization, Schneiders said, the Missouri River was 5,000 to 10,000 feet wide at Sioux City, going by at about 2 mph. Now, it's 740 feet wide, traveling at 6 mph.

Memorial Day in the USA. The start of that wonderful time of year.

Tourist Season (aka Fucking Idiots on the Roads and in Hotels)

As a professional traveller, Memorial Day to Labor Day is the time of year I have come to hate. I would rather drive on ice covered roads than deal with tourists!

The SUV or Minivan or Crossover or whatever, you load up with your kids and bikes and whatever else you can strap on or stuff in. Head down the highway, in the left lane, not paying attention to anything.

Every night I make it safely to my destination, check into my room, go have a quiet dinner (sometimes it's quiet), and back to the room to relax.

That's about the time the kids are running up and down the hall screaming and yelling, getting all of the dogs in the hotel (no pets allowed) barking as loud as they can. The parents immediately remedy this after motel sex (that's why the kids were in the halls in the first place) by screaming at the top of their lungs telling the little bastards to settle down or there will be a time out.

I'm too tired to finish this, but one last thing:

Today I had to mail some things. Since I enjoy small towns, a small town post office seemed like the thing to do. Normally the only people you see are the Postmaster and maybe Uncle Joe or Grandma Zelda. Today turned out much much different.

There was a young lady, 35 or so, having a heated discussion about postage, certified mail, and several other things I can't recall. While this was going on, I addressed the flat rate envelope. The phone rang:

Postmaster: "The party starts at seven."

Postmaster: " Yes, bring your own beer."

pause

Postmaster: "No, no kids under twenty one. OK goodbye."

The discussion about how certified mail continues. In walks a young man, who looks at me, a customer, and asks if he can use the restroom. I tell him that I am not from town and don't work in the post office (this should have been obvious because I was standing in line).

He immediately interrupts the ongoing certified mail discussion when the phone rings again.

Postmaster: "The party starts at seven."

Postmaster: " You can bring any kind of alcohol you want."

Postmaster: "I don't think that would be a good idea."

The young man then asks to use the restroom and is told it is not a public restroom but there is a rest area about a mile outside of town. At this point, I think the kid was resigned to the fact that he was going to s*** his pants. He left.

Finally the certified letter lady gets the answers she want, but starts complaining about the cost! After a bit more discussion the transaction is completed.

No, here comes Joe Cool Bob, asking about when the Pro Wrestlers are going to be in the big town down the road.

I paid my $4.95 and walked out the door. Relieved that I don't live here.

My neighbor raises cattle. Very good cattle. One of the things I really enjoy is being in and among them during calving season. His cows are very docile, so it is fairly easy and safe, if you don't invade their space.

His mother was a few feet away and never moved. She just watched as I took pictures.

I visited my Doctor today for a follow up concerning the slight medical problem I encountered in December. In early January, tests showed my cholesterol slightly elevated. Elevated enough to go on medication. It was recommended that I change my eating habits a bit too.

Since mid January, my weight has dropped from 196 pounds to 181 pounds! I would like to lose about 10-12 pounds more, but that will require exercise, and that sucks!

All of you are reading this saying "Whoa Crab Guy, how did you do it?" Well Kids, it's easier done than said but I'll give it my best shot. This is what I used to do for dinner on the road.

I gave up or severely reduced eating the following:

eggs
most meat (no Gwen I will not go full veggie again)
bread
soda (diet* INCLUDED)

I am eating more:

fish
vegetables, both raw and steamed
fruit

But, I believe the most important thing that I have done is quit drinking beer during the week. Instead, I now drink a vodka martini before dinner (or supper for some of you) and a glass of red wine with my meal.

On Friday and Saturday I still enjoy a bock or two or three or.........

*diet sodas contain some chemicals in the sweetener which enhance the appetite

The Surly Slur

This powerful communication tool is very effective when you wish to vent animosity, but have no obvious direction in which to vent it. The secret is to adopt a delicate ego and selective sense of hearing. It goes like this:

You: “Have another drink.”

Acquaintance: “Thanks, but I can’t.”

You: “What? Did you just call me a c***?”

If a listener is really lazy and asks you to repeat yourself, you have three options.

1.) Tell them to pull the corncobs out of his goddamn ears.

3.) Wave him off and act supremely insulted for the rest of the evening.

Unbridled Snideness and Sarcasm

Half the people in the world were dummies before you strolled in the bar and that percentage will climb in direct proportion to how many drinks you lay into. Of course, a gentleman such as yourself wouldn’t just come out and tell them they’re idiots, no, you will utilize the art of Unbridled Snideness and Sarcasm to express your disdain. No need to be clever or subtle about it, those dolts wouldn’t understand subtlety if you hit them over the head with it.

Dummy: “Wow, it’s packed in here tonight.”

You: “Who are you, the goddamn fire marshal?”

Dummy: “Are you in line for a drink?”

You: “No, I’m just standing here because I get a thrill out of people asking me if I’m standing in line.”

Dummy: “What’s wrong with you?”

You: “What’s right with you?”

Aggressive Exaggeration and Flagrant Falsehoods

What is truth, anyway? Does anyone really know? If five people witness the same event, you’re likely to get five different versions of exactly what happened.
And if nobody else was on hand to witness the event that may or may not have happened, doesn’t the truth lie in your hands, even if you weren’t there?

You: “So, I was on my way to the video store when this van full of gangbangers waving guns tried to run me off the road. They were wearing blue, so I think they were Crips.”

Listener: “Really? What’d you do?”

You: “I floored it and nearly ran into a goddamn fire truck. The guy driving it looked like Kurt Russell.”

Listener: “No shit?”

You: “Yeah. As a matter of fact, it was Kurt Russell. He must be researching some new fireman movie. Anyway, he told me to follow him and we drove to a bar to meet his wife Goldie Hawn and have a couple beers.”

Listener: “Wife? I thought they never got married.”

You: “Well, that makes sense, because she was really hitting on me.”

There. You’re all set. You now have the requisite skills to communicate effectively while blasted. Sadly, none of these techniques will help you talk the bartender into giving you just one more drink.

Dr. Grumpy has an interesting bit about the pharmaceutical industry today. Here's a preview:

Pharmaceuticals are amazing stuff. You can bitch and moan about their costs, side effects, or the number of them you're taking, but what they've done to extend life and improve it's quality is truly remarkable.

And for all the bad raps they get, I salute the pharmaceutical industry, and those who work anonymously in labs around the world, to bring us these miracles.

But drug companies also do absolutely weird crap. One thing that's recently driven me nuts is the trend away from drugs of real value toward what I call "drugs of convenience" (DoC).

For years I have driven by and enjoyed this barn. The first few years it was used to house cattle during the winter and calving season. What a wonderful place.

However on my last trip to South Dakota it was gone. A sad commentary about the state of agriculture in Iowa.

I will not be taking a picture of what's left.
