The Long Straight Road

Neat!

From my perspective, on the lookout for pirates of course, I rely on your photography to see rolling topography and the detail of an earthen overpass, but there's something else that's really cool.

I don't know the history of it, yet it's obvious that section roads were surveyed north-south east-west according to true (not magnetic) north. The east-west roads aren't totally straight. In the distance you can see them curve left toward the east and right toward the west. (The earth is, in fact, shaped like a ball.)

Very occassionally on a state line, there's a corrective jog in roads where I suppose surveyors found themselves in a kerfuffle as evidenced here between South Dakota and Minnestota.

I love road shots. That is all. I asked Miss M if could stop and take pictures of the cows last weekend and she just said, "You're SO city." So we didn't. And I'm sad that we didn't. It's the little things that make me happy.

This picture was taken looking north (towards South Dakota). I do love the "not quite straight" look of it. As for the corrections surveyors had to make (to overcome the curvature of this little ball we live on), I live about 1/3 of a mile south of "correction line". When you go north, you have to jog about 300 yards west to continue north. There is a town in Iowa called Correctionville, where the jog is right in the middle of the business district.

Kate: Don't let Miss M pull that city thing on you. I live in the country and I don't take city pictures!
