Captain Crab's Interesting Stuff of the Day

I am a Pirate and I know stuff!

Did you know that Campbell's most popular soup brand is tomato, and that the company sells about 350 million cans each year?
Chicken Noodle is the next highest seller, and has exactly 216 noodles in each can. Although these two U.S. favorites are sold overseas, each country has its own regional favorite. For instance, Watercress and Duck-Gizzard soup is popular in China, and Cream of Chili Poblano soup is enjoyed in Mexico.

Halloween Costume Suggestions

Jackie and Dunlap have some Halloween costume ideas for all y'all:

Sarah Palin: Just Like You and Me

Poor Todd and Sarah, middle class folks. According to the Wall Street Journal:

The Palins’ assets seem enviable: a half-million-dollar home on a lake with a float-plane at the dock, two vacation retreats, commercial-fishing rights worth an estimated $50,000 or more and an income last year of at least $230,000. That compares to a median income of $64,333 for Alaskans and $50,740 for Americans in 2007,according to the Census Bureau.
Here's the rest of the story.

Six Months Later

Six months or so ago, I took a picture of these mares and their foals. Go here to see them in May.

Republicans are Easy

Just when you think it can't get any better (or worse) someone like Sen. Michele Bachmann (R MN) comes along. 1st with her anti American witch hunt statement, now this:

Of immigrants unlawfully in the U.S., she added, “They’re bringing in disease and violence and every sort of difficulty. We need to protect ourselves against that.”

For an Outsider, She Knows the Insiders

Upon being elected governor, Palin began developing relationships with
Washington insiders, who later championed the idea of putting her on the 2008
ticket. “There’s some political opportunism on her part,” Bitney said. For
years, “she’s had D.C. in mind.” He added, “She’s not interested in being on the
junior-varsity team.”

Small Towns

If you are going to be in Iowa the 1st weekend of August, be sure to stop by Knierim. Pronounced "ca near um" (the K is very important to us).

You will find that a small town celebration of the past, present, and future is well, just plain fun. Have a good conversation, eat some great food, enjoy some games.

If you look closely you will be able to locate PJ, the H, the Crab and that homeless guy from South Dakota. We're not sure how he got to Iowa, but he was fun and had a great time.

I hope the Nadas don't get upset.

An Explanation

Some may wonder why there are pictures of old barns, farmsteads, cattle, horses and the occasional sheep* and nothing having to do with new things here in the Midwest. One picture should help you understand:

I find the above farmstead, with it's new "suburban" style home and huge grain bins, bloody boring. Why one would build a house on top of a hill (with nothing to look at but corn and soybean fields, face it to the north, and not plant any trees is beyond my imagination.

*sociologists and the H like sheep.

Credit Default Swaps

Is there anyone who reads this blog (all three of you) or anyone who just happens to land here from somewhere else in the www world who can explain to me, in terms that I can understand, what the hell a credit default swap is and how it works?

A Week Too Early

I was hoping to have some gorgeous "fall foliage fotos" this week. But alas, I should have waited until next week. The trees are just starting to turn. However, I did take a few pictures. You'll just have to use your imagination, OK kids?
By the way, none of these pictures were taken while my vehicle was in motion.

Post Turtle

While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75-year old Texas rancher whose hand was caught in a gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to Sarah Palin and her bid to be a heartbeat away from being President .

The old rancher said, 'Well, ya know, Palin is a post turtle.'

Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a post turtle was.

The old rancher said, 'When you're driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a post turtle.'

The old rancher saw a puzzled look on the doctor's face, so he continued to explain. 'You know she didn't get up there by herself, she doesn't belong up there, she doesn't know what to do while she is up there, and you just wonder what kind of dumb ass put her up there to begin with.
