Back to the Ship

Important update below!

After over a year, I was finally contacted by The Dread Pirate Roberts today. He faxed me a copy of the map of his course over the past year.

I'm beginning to think that I may have to go take control of ship again, which he has renamed "The Sarah"*.

Bloody bastard!

Update: Due to McPalin, I have decided not to replace The Dread Pirate Roberts at the helm of "The Sarah"* until after the presidential election!.

*Send possible new ship names, please!

Captain Crab's Quote of the Day

This from Paul Krugamn of the New York Times:

So what we now have is non-functional government in the face of a major crisis, because Congress includes a quorum of crazies and nobody trusts the White House an inch.

As a friend said last night, "we’ve become a banana republic with nukes".

Cracker Wisdom

The Sarah Rules

Carl Hiaasen has a column in the Miami Herald today about Mrs. Palin. To read the whole column go here.

"The vice presidential debate is set for next Thursday, and millions of voters will be watching to see if moderator Gwen Ifill of PBS behaves herself.

Most journalists are still getting accustomed to the Sarah Rules, as
established and enforced by John McCain's campaign team. The most important is
Sarah Rule No. 1: Don't treat Gov. Palin like a male candidate, or you'll be
accused of character assassination."

Where in the World was Captain Crab?

First I was in South Dakota, where these horses were very happy to pose for a group photo. The one in the middle of the picture wasn't real excited, however.

Then, after leaving South Dakota, I stopped in a small Sioux County, Iowa park between Akron and Hawarden*, where you can look over the Big Sioux River and see South Dakota.

*Hawarden is home to Iowa Lamb, a lamb packing plant. Gwen loves sheep and lambs!

Friday Fun

I was going to post Sarah's interview with Katie Couric this morning, but that was just too depressing. So here from a long time ago is one of my all time favorite videos. For you youngsters in the audience, Paul Simon is the short one.

A none expense paid trip to nowhere for who can tell me where this was taken:

Captain Crab's Thoughts from the Road

The Sarah hiatus is over. There are just some things that are too important to ignore.

From Syrin's Blog:*

The problem, as far as our political process is concerned, is that half the electorate revels in Palin's lack of intellectual qualifications. When it comes to politics, there is a mad love of mediocrity in this country. "They think they're better than you!" is the refrain that (highly competent and cynical) Republican strategists have set loose among the crowd, and the crowd has grown drunk on it once again. "Sarah Palin is an ordinary person!" Yes, all too ordinary.

Almost Arkansas

Years ago, I decided to use a some of my GI Bill (back when the GI Bill was worth something) by going to a community college in Northern Arkansas.

Having lived in Texas, and Texas being close to Arkansas (like Alaska is close to Russia) I figured it would pretty much the same.

No, it isn't! Arkansas is a lot more like Tennessee.

Anyway, here is the Red State Update, for y'all.

Rep. Marcy Kaptur

Bad Joke of the Day

It's not really a joke, but it seems like it:

Up to 10,000 staff at the New York office of the bankrupt investment bank Lehman Brothers will share a bonus pool set aside for them that is worth $2.5bn (£1.4bn), Barclays Bank, which is buying the business, confirmed last night.

AIG and You

Well, folks, it seems that all of us are now in the insurance business. With the bailout of AIG, the government now owns 80% of the company. Read the whole story here.

Sad, Sad, Sad

I am involved in the ag business sector in Iowa and South Dakota. I pray that none of my customers act like this.

My So Called Life

As an agricultural equipment salesman, dealing with people on the right is a daily occurrence for me. I have to bite my tongue (or lip) to keep from laughing at the right wing BS that comes out of customers mouths. Visiting customers and being interrupted while they listen to limbaugh or o'reilly isn't very productive for me. I get tired of the constant "Obama" jokes and how "hot" Sarah Palin is (sorry Sarah, you ain't!).

Thank God I don't own a gun!

Harvest Moon

Bees will be Bees

PJ has an "Sedum Autumn Joy" which is also called "Autumn Stonecrop" planted outside of my office. I stepped outside a few minutes ago to enjoy the late summer evening. There were several Bumble Bees enjoying the weather and the plant also. Here's my favorite bee.

Captain Crab's Important Announcement

This is my last post having to do with politics.

It's all fun and games from now on!

the Crab

What Cheer?

What Cheer, Iowa, of course!

A phone company

An opera house

And a very relaxed cat!

Facts! We don't need no stinking facts!

Thanks to Chez at "Deus Ex Malcontent" for this gem:

"The more the New York Times and The Washington Post go after Sarah Palin, the better off she is, because there's a bigger truth out there and the bigger truths are she's new, she's popular in Alaska and she is an insurgent. As long as those are out there, these little facts don't really matter."

John Feehery, Republican strategist

Andrew Sullivan has a great piece at The Daily Dish:

"McCain has demonstrated in the last two months that he does not have the character to be president of the United States. And that is why it is more important than ever to ensure that Barack Obama is the next president."

Now We're having Fun!

I need a job in Bush's government:

The whole story is at CNN:

Key government officials overseeing the energy industry had sex with, used illegal drugs with, and accepted gifts from representatives of oil and gas companies they were supposed to be regulating, according to a report issued Wednesday by the Department of the Interior's inspector general.

The $5.3 million investigation "uncovered recreational marijuana and cocaine use" by "a handful" of Interior Department staff, and found two federal employees "engaged in brief sexual relationships with representatives from companies doing business" with the department.

Sarah,Sarah, Sarah!

Here is a little bit about "The Republican Sweetheart".

"The huge increases in tax revenues during her mayoral administration weren’t enough to fund everything on her wish list though, borrowed money was needed, too. She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it with indebtedness of over $22 million. What did Mayor Palin encourage the voters to borrow money for? Was it the infrastructure that she said she supported? The sewage treatment plant that the city lacked? or a new library? No. $1m for a park. $15m-plus for construction of a multi-use sports complex which she rushed through to build on a piece of property that the City didn’t even have clear title to, that was still in litigation 7 yrs later–to the delight of the lawyers involved! The sports complex itself is a nice addition to the community but a huge money pit, not the profit-generator she claimed it would be. She also supported bonds for $5.5m for road projects that could have been done in 5-7 yrs without any borrowing."

Ms. Palin

Sarah came out with her verbal guns blazing *when she took on the media during her speech at the Republican National Convention. After hearing a few of her remarks, I immediately thought of a past vice president. I could change a few dates and phrases and the following could be about "The Dear Downtrodden Governor from Alaska".
______________________________________________
On November 13, 1969, Vice President Spiro Agnew became a household word when he vehemently denounced television news broadcasters as a biased "unelected elite" who subjected President Richard M. Nixon's speeches to instant analysis. The president had a right to communicate directly with the people, Agnew asserted, without having his words "characterized through the prejudices of hostile critics." Agnew raised the possibility of greater government regulation of this "virtual monopoly," a suggestion that the veteran television newscaster Walter Cronkite took as "an implied threat to freedom of speech in this country." But Agnew's words rang true to those whom Nixon called the Silent Majority.

NPR's "All Things Considered" is one of the great news programs around. Better than anything on the "telly-vision", but NPR's "Morning Edition" is also fantastic. But, getting back to "ATC", yesterday's program introduced me to some new music. Enjoy.
